So what’s a micro glass Quilter’s Clapper and why do you need one?

A perfect seam press is a combination of steam, heat and the cooling down of the fabric. If the fabric can be weighted down during the cooling process, you’ll get a perfectly pressed, flat seam. The wooden Quilter’s clapper is great but it takes a bit longer to cool down than micro glass filled weights and the wood requires light, manual pressure.

The beads I use are micro-fine, round marbles. Glass has low thermal conductivity; this means they pass heat slowly and remain cooler for a longer period of time. This is great for sewing projects where you needed the fabric to cool down faster than normal, or during the fusion process when making the Fabric Flip Baskets. They’re great at cooling down iron-on Cricut and Silhouette projects too. They’re also washable unlike beans, rice and other natural fillings. When finished, they feel like little soft sacks of flower, so they’re not lumpy and won’t leave indentations in the fabric.

The most important reason to use glass is that it’s a lot heavier by volume compared to other weight additives or wooden clapper.

Tips:

The pouches should lay as flat as possible so don’t overfill them or make the pouches smaller.
Use a good quality quilter’s, 100% cotton. This means the stitching is close together.
Use the default stitch length on your sewing machine.
Make sure the tension is accurate.
BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO GET THE BEADS INTO YOUR SEWING MACHINE.
The glass beads are 50 to 70 microns in diameter that’s about the size of table salt. Don’t purchase smaller beads as they are similar to powdered sugar and may come out of any holes in the fabric. (20 to 45 Microns in diameter is too small. Larger sizes, above 70 microns in diameter, will give the sacks a lumpy feel.)

Cut one 12” x 9” from fabric. This will be folded in half to create two layers. The two layers are used as an extra precaution to prevent the micro beads from slipping through the stitching.

With right side facing down, fold the fabric in half, wrong sides together and press. The measurement should now be 6” x 9”.

Sew 3/8” seam allowance across one short end and the long side. *Be sure to backstitch at start and stop. Zig zag stitch 1/4” from the edge. (You’ll be tempted to use a Serger but don’t. The straight stitch and zigzag stitch need to be separate from each other.)

Before turning, press the seam allowance to “lock” the stitching. DO NOT TRIM THE CORNER.

Optional: Place a small strip of Wonder Tape the tape on one side but don’t peel the back the paper yet.

Carefully pour the two glass bead packages into the bottom of the pouch. Do not add more than what is recommended. It helps to tap the beads to the bottom of the pouch.

Sew the opening closed at 3/8” and 1/4”. Backstitch at start and stop. BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO GET THE BEADS INTO YOUR SEWING MACHINE. Shake the pouch and check for weak spots where the beads may fall out.
